Here's an incredible gem of a wheelset to bring your next bike project to the next level, whether it's a vintage restoration or a new daily whip. The photos don't do these wheels justice — the anodization is in extraordinarily good shape, the colors rich and eye-catching. The wheels' pedigree and history are great too — these were the original wheels off a 1995 Klein Rascal that has had only two owners; they have maybe 100-150 miles of collected riding, total, ever, between that person and me. So these incredible wheels are basically new, like they came out of a time machine just to go on your next amazing bike project. Here are the specs and what the auction includes:
Mavic 217 SUP rims
in a subtle-gold anodized finish, with machined sidewalls, asymmetrical spoke drilling, double-walled construction, and eyelets. Sized 559x17.
Ringlé "Bubba" hubs
in the most gorgeous anodized purple finish you could ever ask for, and just spotlessly good-looking. You could swear they just rolled right off the factory floor.
Ringlé quick-release skewers
in the same heart-throb magenta anno finish.
Double-butted Wheelsmith stainless steel spokes
(with straight-pull Wheelsmith spokes on the rear driveside).
Anodized purple spoke nipples
to match the hubs.
Sachs LY 95 freewheel
, 7 speeds, 12-28. I couldn't find my freewheel removal tool, so this comes bonus with the wheelset.
Wheelset weight is ~1500g.
The front wheel weighs just 724g. The rear
*with the freewheel attached* weighs 1174g. Specs for the Sachs freewheel, insofar as I can find them, list it at about 430g; so the rear probably weighs about 750g. Total wheelset weight is under or approximately 1500g.
This wheelset is in exceptional shape, and not even just for its age — it's probably in better shape than the wheels most of us are riding on the regular. They're dazzling. That said, there are a few blemishes I want to point out just for full disclosure.
There are a few very small nicks or scratches on the rim. I've included a photo of the far-and-away worst spot. It's all almost completely un-noticeable, unless you're within about 18" from the wheel and specifically looking for blemishes.
There's one nearly ding on the rear rim; however, it's located right at the rim's outermost edge, above the brake track — I did not notice it while riding, just while cleaning it. I've included a pic of this too. I believe it counts as "imperceptible."
One purple spoke nipple was replaced with a silver one. I've included a pic of this too.
The rear hub spins a touch roughly, and will benefit from a basic hub servicing. I would have done this, but again, I couldn't find my freewheel removal tool, so I've left it as-is.
So! Get yourself these beautiful rolling statement wheels for the holidays and ride into the new year in style.
